Document Summary

The iron triad: three elements (iron, cobalt, nickel) have such similar properties that they are known as the iron triad. Iron is the fourth most abundant element in the earth"s crust. Cobalt and nickel are not nearly as common, but they are still sufficiently abundant that their annual production is thousands of tons. Industrial magnets are made from an alloy of nickel, cobalt and aluminum. Nickel is used in batteries along with cadmium. Iron is also mixed with carbon to create a variety of steels with different properties. Iron is necessary part of hemoglobin, the substance that transports oxygen in the blood. The primary function of hemoglobin is to transport oxygen.
