Opera comique uses spoken dialogue (just like singspiel). 19th century opera: not many applause breaks, and it becomes hard to distinguish a recitative from an aria. Wagner and liszt (his father in law) started the new german school. New form of art very orchestra oriented, emotional in its content, and very programmatic. Form and rules of harmony are less important. Wagner is well known for his use of brass instruments. Wagner wrote his own libretto for the ring cycle- not usual. Historical allegory unique to the german people- wagner"s operas.
