EESA10H3 Lecture 10: information from lecture slides + information added by prof during lecture
Document Summary
There are different exposure patterns between children and adults. Children are exposed in different ways (different pathways of exposure) and their patterns of exposure are different from adults. Unique behaviour: children are not as sanitary (touch mouths without washing hands), at risk of ingesting small objects, at risk of lead ingestion (contaminated paints, toys), children are naturally curious and like to put things in their mouths. How and where they spend time: prone to skin infections more than adults because may crawl on contaminated grass, play in contaminated sand, etc. , have higher risk of getting fungal diseases. Impact of short statue: the breathing zone of children is lower than the adult breathing zone (around 4-6 ft), children breathe closer to the ground. Environmental health: children have different skin; more permeable to chemicals, larger surface area of intestines means more of a chance that the contaminants will be absorbed,
