Document Summary

Chapter 18, how would you characterize white-indian relations in the us west from 1865 to 1900, relations were very bad because whites treated them poorly. Also indians kept getting pushed onto bad infertile land, because whenever the whites wanted to expand, treaties were formed. Indians viewed the land as sacred and that human beings were connected to animals, plants, and nature. They believed they all had a soul of their own: whites just took up land to farm, agriculture, or raise livestock, they don"t think as far as the emotions of nature. Whites took the culture of private property and indians believed in sharing the land such as what. Chief joseph said when he tried to speak for his people from the primary source. They always acted like they cared about the indians but kept pushing them into the bad lands.
