Modal model: came out in the late 60"s, early 70"s when cognitive psychology was beginning to mature, this model appeared in scientific american, a traditionally invitation only forum. Very prestigious to have your results appreciated by scientific american: words primary and secondary are terms used by william james but are now called short-term and long-term. In order for items to stay in short term memory, they must be maintained through rehearsal. If the item has left short term memory before the transfer to long term memory, it would be lost: short term memory can"t hold items for very long because new items competing for limited capacity. Primacy and recency effects: lab 3, experiment: given a list of words to remember. Distinguishing between ltm and stm: variables that only affect ltm should only affet pre-recency.
