Document Summary

Things that happen to us in early childhood have a way of shaping what we become the id wants gratification. When it wants something it wants it immediately. Ego- brings in the realities of life and creates a balance. Superego- provides the moral constrains that hold back id behaviour. When there is too much mental energy is spent in dealing with the conflicts between the id and the ego and superego, the individual can be prone to mental illness. Freudian conflicts- there is an urge/impulse, then there is conflict, and something that prevents or blocks these urges from being fulfilled. Repressing- push it out of conscience/ repressing negative feelings/seeking distraction from the upsetting thoughts. When you repress extremely upsetting thoughts/events they can manifest themselves later in life as mental illnesses. Reaction formation- maintaining the negative feelings, but t rying to defensively turn them into positive ones.
