POL101Y1 Lecture : Nationalism and Conflict
Document Summary
A nation is a group that wants to have it"s own state. a group of people who believe they share a common fate, history, culture, and language. nationalism says that the state and the nations should be congruent * Leaders of states should share with the mass of people (the nation) a common culture, language, a sense of shared history, sometimes a shared religion. Leaders of state should have same language, grow up with same ideas as you, and are somehow connected to you. It has only existed in the past few hundred years. France is the home of the french, germany is the home of the germans, I talians is the home of the i talians etc. Never before in human history did people insist that their leaders be of the same culture and never did leaders try to make the people share their culture. I t"s this need for congruence that needs to be explained.
