Criminologist assess/measure crime over time and place and they measure the characteristics of criminals and crime. Collect information for study analysis in accordance with research methods. Major schools of thought that contributed to criminology: classical school focused on crime (cesare baccaria, positivist school focused on criminals (cesare lombroso, enrico ferri and raffaele garofalo) Perspective of individuals vary and change as does the perspective of the state when laws change over time. Have to take in perspective the context and characteristic of each crime. The media is an important part of context because it shapes and distorts the perception of criminal events. Crime is closely connected to the notion of morality; when our morals change so does our views of what is appropriate and inappropriate.
