Early modern period race had to do with lineage and gamily. Now it"s more biological/ physical characteristics, to geographical connection (where you were born) Climate theory divided the world into three parts (north, south, and middle: defined what kind of mind/ spirit you have, warmer temperature edgier, colder temperature- chilled out. Class/ caste system tend to be racially inflected. 2, some scholars argue that it is anachronistic to talk about race in this period. Race as anachronism: then race was family, class, lineage. What words tell us: cotgrave (1611, florio (1611) Cotgrave- race: a rave, lineage, family, kindred, house, brood, sort, kind; also as race. To get children; also, to begin or set up, a race, or brood, of horses dogs, etc. Florio- race: a brood, a stock, a descent, a lineage (about animals), a pedigree. Cotgrave applies broadly (humans & animals: embodiment seems to be midding, fair race fair maiden/ fair gentlewoman.
