Imperialism as a necessary outcome of capitalism: strategic or political theory. Maintaining military bases in countries that have no economic value. Neo-colonialism: economic situation of many former colonies after political independence has been secured. Exploit local resources, dominate international trade, influence national governments to their advantage. Dependency theory: the failure of third world states to develop results from dependence on the advanced capitalist world.
