ANT203Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Haplorhini, Dactyly, Synapomorphy
Document Summary
Haplorhini: tarsiers, old world monkeys, new world monkeys, etc. Generalized = traits that are flexible and can be adapted for many functions. Retained several ancestral mammalian traits: e. g. number of digits. Associated with sitting, leaping, standing, and bipedal walking: flexible, generalized limb structure. Allows primates to practice various locomotor behaviours. E. g. rotation of forearm: prehensile (adapted for grasping) hands (and sometimes feet) Allows for grasping and manipulation of objects: five digits (pentadactyly) Exception: muriquis (new world, lives in central and south america) Diet and teeth: generalized diet (can eat a wide range of foods) Not all dietary generalists, some very specialized (bamboo lemur eats bamboo: generalized dentition. 4 types of teeth (incisors, canines, premolars and molars) The senses and the brain: colour vision (aka trichromatic vision) Spot ripe fruit and young leaves: stereoscopic vision. Allows for fields of vision for each eye to overlap: decreased reliance on olfaction (sense of smell)
