Initial goals of the project are to catalogue the 3 billion or so dna base pairs the make up the human race. Mitochondrial dna (mtdna)- in mitochondria inherited through mothers. *race has no basis in science- there"s no such thing as race". The maya had large cities, agriculture, religious beliefs, accurate calendars. They were essentially civilized in every way but a systematic writing style- their scribbles meant nothing. They used their lack of formal writing style as basis to classify them as barbarians and not a civilization. The location of large settlements facilitated (or discouraged) communications and sharing of cultural methods.
