Stress: a pattern of physiological, behavioural, emotional, and cognitive responses to real or imagined stimuli that are perceived as blocking a goal or endangering our well-being. Stress process: stressors(catastrophic, life changing hassles)--->intervening factors(appraisal, perceived control, personality, social support, coping)--->stress. Cortisol: effects similar to epinephrine, converts to protein to glucose, makes fats available for energy, almost every cell in body has receptor for glucocorticoids. Only worried about dealing with stressor, all energy is dumped into escape response, don"t worry about storing energy, etc. , become more vulnerable to any disease. Note: reaction depends on appraisal, do you perceive that situation is a threat and that you can not cope--->distress. Psychosomatic: disorders with primarily physical symptoms, but caused or maintained by psychological factors. Control: weiss, group 1: no shock, group 2: avoidable shock, group 3: unavoidable shock, note: group 2 & 3 are yokedreceive exactly the same number of shocks.
