Pilgrimage roads see floorplans in textbook and on blackboard. Traditional latin-cross basilica was modified by extending the side aisles. New architectural development in romanesque architecture is the replacement of wooden roofs to stone barrel vaults. Stone vaults needed buttresses (use of the weight of forces of compression in arch construction) Early 12th century, gothic architecture started to arise, but it overlapped with romanesque style. Gothic cathedrals are most elaborate and western monuments in stone. Arches are enhanced with slim columns to give a lighter" effect. Butresses are no longer needed for support, so they could be pierced by large windows to increase the light. Vertical thrust, buildings are becoming increasingly elongated. Gothic art: darker at the bottom, lighter at the top. English cathedrals are set in grass fields, french cathedrals rise from a street. Fewer glass stained windows, less need for buttressing.
