Background and context

Oxidative phosphorylation is the biochemical process that takes place within the inner mitochondrial membrane of aerobic eukaryotic organisms. This process is named so because of the passage of electrons from NADH2 (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and FADH2 (Flavin adenine dinucleotide) to oxygen. The electron transfer is coupled to the passage of protons from the matrix to the inner mitochondrial membrane. This coupling acts as the driving force to drive the process of synthesis of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate).
