Background and context
Cell constituents are divided into two categories: inorganic and organic. Minerals, water, and gases that do not contain carbon and hydrogen are inorganic components. Carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids, and other organic elements include both carbon and hydrogen. Organic refers to almost everything that contains carbon.
