Background and context

Embryo sac is the female gametophyte or megaspore of the seed bearing plants. It is formed by the meiotic division of the megaspore mother cell. It consists of the thin-walled sac within the nucellus in the ovule. The mature embryo sac contains total 7 cells: 2 synergid cells (on either side of an egg cell at micropyle end), 3 antipodal cells (at chalazal end), 1 egg cell and 1 central cell (with two polar nuclei).
