Background and context

The basal part of the diencephalon is the hypothalamus, a part of the forebrain. It consists of neural tissue and is connected with the anterior lobe of hypophysis by hypophysial portal blood vessels and with the posterior of the hypophysis by axons of neurosecretory cells.
