Background and context

The covering of axons made up of fatty acid is myelin. It acts as an insulator and minimizes the dissipation of the electrical signal. It travels through the axon and increases the speed of the nerve conduction impulse. Thereby, the demyelination of axons results in multiple sclerosis.
