Primary active transport and secondary active transport are the two categories of active transportation based on the energy source employed. Energy is directly produced from ATP breakdown in primary active transport, while energy is derived from stored energy in the form of the stored energy of difference in ionic concentration between the two sides of the membrane in secondary active transport. 

 

The sodium/calcium exchanger is an ATP-dependent antiporter that primarily functions by exporting calcium ions and receiving sodium ions.
