Background and context

Animal cells have three types of junctions between them which allow them to communicate with each other. These are gap junctions, tight junctions and desmosomes. A tight junction is a watertight seal between two neighboring cells. It is a protein seal made of two proteins; claudins and occludins which hold the two cells firmly against each other.
