Background and context
The cerebral cortex is the outermost layer of the brain that is linked with our highest mental abilities. The cerebral cortex, which is the outer surface of the brain, is associated with higher-level processes such as consciousness, thought, emotion, reasoning, language, and memory. Each hemisphere of the cerebral cortex of mammals is divided into four parts - the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes.
