The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are the part of the autonomic nervous system that unconsciously controls body functions. The functioning of sympathetic and parasympathetic are opposite to each other. The sympathetic nervous system controls the response in a "flight or fight" situation. The parasympathetic nervous system maintains the "rest and digestion" response. The sympathetic nervous system is associated with an increase in heart rate and inhibits or decreases digestion.
