Background and context

The kinetochore is the protein present inside the centromere. It holds the sister chromatids together. This is why only due to breakage of the centromere during anaphase II the sister chromatids can separate and move to the two poles. Kinetochore also helps the chromosome bind to the spindle fibers during cell division.
