Background and context

Arteries and veins are tube-like structures often called blood vessels, as they carry blood towards and away from the heart. Arteries carry the oxygenated blood (except pulmonary artery) away from the heart to the rest of the body while veins carry deoxygenated blood (except pulmonary vein) towards the heart.
