Background and context

The reproductive system is regulated by hormones secreted from the pituitary gland, reproductive organs, and adrenal cortex. The follicle-stimulating hormone or FSH and the luteinizing hormone or LH are produced by the anterior pituitary gland in both males and females during puberty. These hormones are together called gonadotropins and they regulate the gonads; testes in males and ovaries in females.

FSH controls the production of male and female gametes while LH activates the gonads to produce sex hormones.
