Background and context

An ecosystem is a basic functional ecological unit where the biotic (living) components interact with the abiotic (non-living) factors which are necessary for the maintenance of life. The energy produced by the autotrophs is flown through the ‘eat-and be-eaten’ chain and in this way generates energy. The energy acquired by the organisms decreases as they move up the trophic level.
