Background and context

Transformation is the direct assimilation of the genetic material across the cell membrane from the environment. Apart from this, conjugation and transduction are two processes that are also used in the exchange of genetic material of bacteria. The transformation process laid the basis of the exchange of genetic material in bacteria or other microbes.
