Consensus sequences are the promoter sequences in the prokaryotic gene that remains preserved in all prokaryotes. They are similar in all bacterial species. The promoter sequence is the sequence that initiates the transcription in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, but they have different sequences. -10 and -35 is the consensus sequence in prokaryotes.
