Given information

The reason why performing a sit-up with your hands at the back of the head is more difficult than with the arms stretched out in front of the body.

Step-by-step explanation

Step 1.
The torque exerted on a body is equal to the product of the moment of inertia and its angular acceleration. Therefore, torque is directly proportional to the moment of inertia of an object.

Thus, when a body perform the sit-up from the laying down position, there will be a rotation of the upper half of the body.
As the moment of inertia increases for the upper half the torque also increases. Due to the larger torque it will be harder to do sit up.
