Four charged particles are moving near the current-carrying wire. The initial direction of those particles are indicated by arrows. The and sign shows the charge of particles.

By using the right-hand thumb rule we can determine the magnetic field produced by the current-carrying wire.

So by pointing a thumb towards the direction of the current, the curled finger will indicate the direction of the magnetic field.

The direction of magnetic force on a charge when it is moving through magnetic field of a wire can be written as:

 

where is a charge, is the electric field, is velocity and is magnetic field.

For this condition the electric effect is zero.
