Background and context
Meselson and Stahl investigated to study DNA replication. E.coli was grown in a medium containing a heavy isotope of nitrogen. This can get incorporated into the nitrogen bases and thereby into the DNA. Then the culture was grown in 14 N medium. The DNA extracted was found to have both the isotopes in each strand.
