Background and context
Any drug that is used to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent disease is referred to as medication. Medications made from natural ingredients have been used by humans for nearly all of human history. A variety of therapeutic substances are derived from living organisms. Compounds originating from plants and animals and compounds produced by microbes can be considered as two categories. Tea brewed from willow bark, for example, was used to treat pain in ancient times.
