An adaptive radiation is a quick branching through speciation of a phylogenetic tree into numerous closely related species; typically, the species "radiate" into diverse environments and niches. With 15 species, the Galápagos finches are an example of a modest adaptive radiation. Lake Victoria's cichlids are an example of a stunning adaptive radiation with over 500 species.
