Background and context

Interferon refers to cytokines that are discharged by infected cells as a warning signal to nearby unaffected cells. It stimulates the production of compounds by the uninfected cell that inhibits viral replication. It does not use an MHC (Major Histocompatibility Complex) class I molecule as a defense strategy.
