Alcohol is lighter than water and has a lower density (it may be ice or liquid). We can see how the molecular structure of alcohol differs from that of ice when we look at it. Ice, for example, has a bigger intermolecular space per unit volume than alcohol. As a result, when placed in a glass of alcoholic beverage, the ice cube sinks rather than floating.
