Background and context

Lyell argued that successive geological processes gradually shaped the Earth's surface. Lyell deduced from this that the Earth must be much older than most people believed. Charles Lyell hypothesized slow uniform processes, which explain the geological structure observed today. Similarly, Charles Darwin said that slow uniform processes explain the biological structures observed today.
