Tonsils which are partly encapsulated lymphatic nodules constitute a defensive ring of lymphatic tissue just at the mouth-pharynx junction.
Tonsillitis is a condition in which the tonsils become swollen and inflamed. If tonsillitis crops up regularly and expansion makes breathing more difficult, then the tonsils could be surgically removed, which is known as a tonsillectomy.
