Background and context

Protists are found in abundance in the seas and other aquatic areas across the planet. Their most distinguishing characteristic is their morphological variety. Small, single-celled organisms may be seen embedded in silica type of Petri dishes, whereas dinoflagellates have protective plates on their bodies and ciliates have the form of slippers.
