Background and context

Myosins are a vast family of motor proteins that may travel along actin filaments in cells. Myosin II, the first myosin to be found, was isolated from skeletal muscle.
Actin-stimulated ATPase activity is seen in a subset of motor proteins. During muscle contraction and cytokinesis, myosins migrate along actin microfilaments and also mediate vesicle translocation. Myosins have a remarkable ability to transform ATP hydrolysis energy into mechanical work.
