The University of Manitoba was Western Canada's first university, founded over 140 years ago. It is the regions largest and only research intensive university. It is located on Anishabe and Metis traditional land, and is home to many Indigenous researchers, staff, and students. It is a public, non-denominational institution, with membership in the Association of Commonwealth Universities and of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.

The university stimulates over $1.8 billion in economic activity for the region, and is a leader in Manitoba's knowledge economy, with groundbreaking research in multiple areas of study.
