Boston University was founded in 1839 and is the nation's second-largest private university. Currently, there are more than 33,000 students who attend the school.
The main campus is located in the center of Boston, close to the Charles River. In addition to the medical school, there are sixteen other colleges on Commonwealth Avenue. There are several public transportation systems serving the Boston area such as the MBTA, metro, trams and buses. Commuting along Commonwealth Avenue is very convenient, especially with the Green Line 'B' Branch.
The Boston University Medical Campus (BUMC) is located at the southern end of the historic Boston area, close to the Boston Medical Center. The Medical Center is one of the main teaching hospitals used by the BU School of Medicine. Boston University has many medical colleges in this area including the School of Medicine, School of Public Health (SPH), Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (SDM), and the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences (GMS).
The university has had eight Nobel Laureates, 23 Pulitzer Prize winners and several Emmy and Tony winners among its past alumni and faculty. Boston University is also known widely for its men's hockey team and the school mascot is an adorable Boston Terrier named Rhett.
