About Florida Gulf Coast University
In roughly 20 years FGCU has emerged as a central hub of education in the state of Florida. It is at the center of life in Fort Meyers, a small city which provides the cultural life for the university. So much has FGCU grown it is now considered the central hub of economic and cultural life in Fort Meyers, Florida.
FGCU is a teaching-oriented university rather than research intensive. Over 80 % of the faculty are tenured or tenure track. This means that the resources of the university including its faculty are completely oriented toward teaching. The university is academically elite in the state of Florida with an average GPA among BGCU students of 3.33. There are over 14,000 students at FGCU. It is also an NCAA Division I athletic program. FGCU also boasts one of the highest graduation rates of the Florida University system.
Over 800 acres comprise the campus and 400 of those acres are preserved wetlands. The natural surroundings accentuate the university and life there. Obviously, the proximity to the ocean is major draw of FGCU. The university sponsors a number of programs which take advantage of the surrounding area and the natural resources. A full campus recreation program ensures that students can have access to the full range of activities available in coastal Florida.
