Rutgers University was established in the year 1766 as the eighth institution of higher education in the United States. It consists of 29 university colleges, of which 16 colleges offer academic or professional degrees at or above the university level. Rutgers offers more than 100 bachelor's degree, over 100 master's degree and more than 80 doctoral or professional degree programs. The number of students enrolled at the university consists of more than 45,000 undergraduate and over 20,000 graduate students. The school is staffed by almost 3,000 people. Rutgers University consists of three campuses: the main campus is located in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and the other two campuses are located in Newark and Camden. New Brunswick's main campus is the largest and most important campus, situated along the Raritan River and extending to Piscataway city.

New Brunswick main campus is subdivided into five smaller campuses: Busch, Livingston, College Avenue, Cook, and Douglass. Busch Campus is located in Piscataway, north of New Brunswick. Raritan River separates the two cities. Busch Campus contains most of the Department of Science and Engineering, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, electronics, civil engineering, geology and so on. It is also the location of the Housing Office, which is in charge of dormitory application and management. Livingston Campus is geographically parallel to Busch Campus, opposite to New Brunswick. The Business School is located here, along with graduate students living in Newton Apartment and undergraduates living in Quad Apartments. Close to the campus is Cedar Lane, where many students choose to live in rental housing. In addition, next to Livingston, along the Raritan River, there is a largest venue for student activities nearby: Johnson Park. Johnson Park is close to the Raritan River and offers a variety of activities, such as barbecues, tennis, soccer, small zoos, and mudmills. It is a great place for family recreation. College Avenue Campus is located along College Street in the heart of New Brunswick, near New Brunswick Railway Station and Downtown New Brunswick.

Each campus has at least one student activity center and each student center has a student game room and computer room where students can work, relax, and enjoy themselves. The student centers also contain student association offices and other essentials such as ATM's.
