About University of South Florida
Also abbreviated as USF, the University of South Florida is an American metropolitan public research university based in Tampa, Florida, United States. USF was founded in 1956 and is a one of the member institutions of the State University System of Florida. It's ranked the fourth largest public university in the state of Florida.
The three USF system institutions; USF Tampa, USF Sarasota-Manatee and USF St. Petersburg are separately accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The University of South Florida is distinguished as a top tier research university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. It is one of three other universities in Florida to attain this highest level classification. The University of South Florida's Intercollegiate Athletics sports teams (football, baseball, basketball, soccer and softball), compete at the NCAA level.
In 2011, the Intellectual Property Owners Association ranked USF 10th among global universities based on the number of US patents granted. The National Science Foundation has placed USF 43rd in the United States for overall research expenditure among all public and private universities. The U.S. News & World Report has ranked the institution #68 of Top Public Schools and #140 in National Universities.
