Overview of George Washington University (GWU)

About this school

The George Washington University, founded in 1821, is a private institution. At the undergraduate level, GW seeks to offer both a sound education in a liberal context and the foundation skills that prepare students for productive professional lives of continuous learning. The experiences GW presents to students include analytical thinking in a variety of fields, respect for fact and history, practice in adaptability, attention to the consequences of human activity and the first steps toward mastery of a particular domain. The location in the heart of Washington, DC gives the school a special "flavor." GW strives to induce in its students an awareness of ethical and professional values, a sense of responsibility for the larger society, a clear vision of the international, interdependent future and a commitment to public life. Its 36-acre campus is located in the federal section of Washington, DC, several blocks from the White House.
