Document Summary
Lifespan perspective seeks to understand developmental potential by watching how humans grow and change psychologically over the whole of life: william james thought that psychological growth stops at a certain age. Proven wrong: adults can grow psychologically through the whole of life, 1 core theme of lifespan development balance between stability and change. Milestone events (turning points) predictable developments: happen to almost everyone who reaches a particular age, occur throughout the lifespan, examples infant"s fist smile, toddler"s first word, adolescent"s departure from home, marriage etc. Development carries the individual forward through each milestone transition, and each important junctures from infancy through to adulthood. Age group membership exert important sociological and cultural influences on human psychological functioning: what it means to be aged 15, 35, 50 etc. varies across cultures. Age is relevant to: applications/jobs, courses of study, foreign travel, medical treatment, borrowing money from the bank.
