HAND WASHING
Hand washing is extremely important in clinical facilities. It reduces the risk of cross-contamination
(i.e. spreading micro-organisms from one patient to another) and infection.
It is recommended that hands be washed for 40-60 seconds using plain granule soap, soap-filled
sheets or liquid soap. It is further recommended that after the washing of hands, antiseptic alcohol-
based hand rubs be used as soap and water may not be sufficient.
The 5 oets for had hygiee was
developed to protect susceptible individuals
from infectious agent entering their bodies
during procedures, as well as protect health
care workers.
Hand washing is recommended when hands
are visibly soiled following contamination of
the hands, rather than an alcohol based rub.
In addition to the above diagram, there are non-clinical situations that require hand washing.
It is also important to wash hands before and
after the putting on and removal of gloves.
There is a technique to applying these alcohol-
based products, which includes the following
steps:
1. Apply a palmful of the product to a
cupped hand, an adequate amount to cover both
hands.
2. Rub palms against palms.
3. Interlace fingers palm to palm.
4. Rub palms to back of hands.
5. Rub each finger individually on all sides
with other hand.
6. Continue until product is dry, (ABR) 20-30
seconds. Or rinse with warm water and dry.
