The act/art of managing refers to getting things done through people. There are different levels and areas of management. Different levels include; top managers, middle managers, first line managers and non-managerial personnel. Functional areas include: r&d, marketing, finance, production and human resources. Top managers - make long term decisions about the overall direction of the organisation and establish the objectives, policies and strategies for it. Executives at this level must be future oriented, dealing with uncertain, highly competitive conditions. Middle managers - frequently presented as that part of the management pyramid that is least needed. Having several layers of middle management can be viewed as a barrier to quick decision making and as a risk to creating managers who focus on empire building".
