Part of an intellectual russian-jewish family, and lived in gomel a southern. Won a place at the university of moscow and received a degree in law specialising in literature. After his graduation he returned home and taught adults and children. He became interested in children with learning difficulties and intellectual disabilities. He established clinics that conducted research into problems for such children. Particularly interested in devising ways to assess children"s intellectual ability and evaluate effectiveness of intervention strategies. Together with two other russian psychologists, alexander luria and alexei. Leontiev they developed a cultural-historical" or sociohistorical" view of human development emphasising on cognitive activities. There is a significant overlap between piaget and vygotsky"s theories. For example they both held an early interest in psychological research which arose from a request to replicate binet"s intelligence test. Vygotsky was concerned with learning and development within a sociohistorical and socio cultural context.
